A faded photo in the mother's wallet gave hope for a reunion.
The baby smiles wide, the upturned curve of her lips strikingly similar to her mother's. She has thick, dark hair swept to the side with a barrette.
She wears a puff-sleeved dress, trimmed with lace.
The little girl, for many years, did not know who she looked like.
At 13, as she outpaced the height of her adoptive mother, father and brother, she began to wonder who her birth parents might be — how tall they were, whether she bore any resemblance.
It was up a set of cement steps and behind a teal door of a Del Mar neighborhood home where Amanda Dickstein found her answer.
She looked like the mayor of Corpus Christi.
In December 1985, Mayor Nelda Martinez gave her days-old daughter to a family: two parents and an older brother, who also was adopted.
